CALVARIO'S HILL

There is a festival on the hill each year. The date is according to the fair depends on the fair of the Patron Saint of Chignahuapan, usually it takes place one week before the July 25. As part of the celebration, there is a procession that goes from “El Honguito” to the top of The Calvary, mass, fireworks, food for everybody, among other things. The Church of El Honguito (tiny fungus in Spanish), is very famous, and it’s a “most visit” place, because, despite its size, the architecture and its ornaments, the really interesting thing is what it's kept inside, a petrified fungus, from which the believers say that it is possible to identify different religious images, like the one of Christ crucified (in order to be able to see it, magnifying glasses are needed). The story is that this fungus was found in 1880, by a peasant, and he thought it was a miracle, so he decided to build a church in that precise spot. The Honguito church was at first named Lord of Health, but eventually it was changed to Our Lady of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
